Arne Schiller, PhD candidate at our partner TU Delft, presented SUSTAINair at the 24th Engineering Mechanics Symposium in Arnhem, Netherlands in October 2021 . His poster “Design and Analysis of Aircraft Structures with Innovative Joints and Recycled Materials” included preliminary project results, in the form of a hybrid single-lap shear joint specimen manufactured by our partners DLR and INVENT. AIT-LKR Ranshofen: 25 years of passion for light metals technologies
|
|
In November 2021, we visited the state-of-the-art facilities of SUSTAINair coordinator LKR Leichtmetallkompetenzzentrum Ranshofen of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT-LKR Ranshofen) in Upper Austria, to get a first-hand glance at their high pressure die casting test campaign. High pressure die casting is a promising sustainable and efficient production process in aviation to manufacture light metal and lightweight parts. Die castings are used to make aircraft parts like frames. Their key advantage is that parts come out as they are introduced, thereby potentially eliminating the need for lengthy riveting to join parts together.

Joanneum Research – Materials Institute: 30 years cutting-edge R&D in materials
|
|
In October 2021, we visited the Materials Institute of our partner Joanneum Research in Styria, to document their various test campaigns on laser welding and L-DED technologies for novel Al- and Ti-based alloys, as well as production technologies based upon plasma-processes and electro-spinning for the optimized deposition of nanofibers for piezo-electric sensors. In SUSTAINair, Joanneum Research is involved with two research groups from its Materials Institute: laser & plasma processing, and sensors & functional printing. Both research groups are united in their vision to optimize materials to make clean aviation and transportation a reality.

Aviation and aerospace sectors need to become fully sustainable and climate-neutral. Circular aviation is the next frontier for the industry to reach in this undertaking. 2nd consortium meeting and first technical deliverable to end first year of SUSTAINair
|

|
In our annual consortium meeting in December 2021, SUSTAINair partners discussed progress made and challenges ahead for the project in advancing circular aviation in Europe. Our partner TU Delft also led the delivery of our first technical deliverable in December 2021, which reports design requirements for aircraft applications with particular focus on 1st and 2nd life materials, integration of Structural Health Monitoring systems and joining technologies, that will be used in SUSTAINair.
